The Dutchman's contract talks with the Saints have stalled, and that has offered encouragement to Everton and new major shareholder Farhad Moshiri, making clear to those at the club that the former Holland international defender is his number one candidate to succeed Roberto Martinez.

Club officials at Goodison Park now believe Moshiri will provide the firepower, in both salary and spending terms, to get their man.

Bill Kenwright is also participating in interviews with potential candidates for the managerial hot-seat, which we understand will continue over the weekend.

Everton fans - would you be happy with this appointment? If not, who should come in to bring the glory days back to Goodison?
