Hello, Is Anyone Awake In Liverpool's Transfer Dept?

*Update* We are looking for liverpool fans to write regular articles about the club for this site. Interested? e-mail e-football@live.co.uk for more info!

I normally like to submit my scribbles on a weekly basis but, just recently, every day or so I want to vent my spleen about what is going on, or not going on, at my beloved Liverpool.

I know they are only rumours, as I’ve said, and been reminded of, on thousands of occasions but let’s look at the web-site tittle tattle today, and the words of our manager . . .

Apparently, we’ve lost out to Tottenham – now that is a surprise!!! – in the race for PSG’s Lavezzi and we’ve lost out to Arsenal for Juve’s Vidal after, yet again, apparently, refusing to increase an offer of £20m so in steps one of the London giants with a few extra quid and we miss out again! This is getting boring, it happens so often! Who will be lost to us next when we put in an inadequate offer? The list of potential players who won’t be plying their trade at Anfield next year, other than when visiting for other clubs, is simply huge.

You could muster a complete team from the players who where keying in the way to Liverpool in their Sat-Navs only to be told to redirect themselves to London or Manchester moments before signing a contract with LFC. Vidal, Lavezzi, Depay, Costa, Willian, Ericksen, Sanchez, Konoplyanka, Mkhitaryan, probably Begovic and Salah! Bit weak in defence but pretty damn good up front!

No doubt United will out-bid us for Begovic, somebody will out-bid us for Illaramendi and Danny Ings could end up at West Brom for all we know as that ‘deal’ has been fermenting for several months now!

There must be ten so-called ‘deals’ that are just about ‘done and dusted’, according to the web-sites, but nothing ever seems to come from them! Rumours, yes, but surely, according to the law of averages, ONE of them must one day come about . . .

When you think we need a new keeper, two centre backs, two midfielders and at least one striker SURELY one player must be found that is cheap enough and unwanted enough by other clubs to actually come here? The only good thing I can see from today’s garbage selection is that we aren’t being linked as much with Pirlo and Alves these days!!!!!

Our much-fabled transfer committee almost certainly contains an American bean-counter from Fenway, our owners, who, in all likelihood, looks at the goings-on during a match at Anfield and wonders which one is the Quarterback!

I’d hazard a guess that very few members of that committee have as much knowledge of Liverpool’s history and needs as any number of our fans have and probably, judging by the transfers done in recent years, my money would be on the ground’s cat having more footballing knowledge than some of them!

And then we have the manager saying that Raheem Sterling isn’t going anywhere for two years! He is GOOD, very good, very bloody good, but he’s not THAT good. He is not a Dalglish, that’s for sure, and probably wouldn’t make our top ten players of all time even when he’s matured as a player. One great season, one mediocre one, so far! Whether he is getting bad advice from his agent or not, who cares? If he is refusing to sign we can use a relatively disinterested player for two years, against his will, or we can get up to £50m NOW and let his take his inflated ego to the Emirates, Chelsea or City.

Just think, for £50m we could get, using our recent transfer history as a gauge, THREE Mario Balotellis . . . and still have enough money left for a couple of bottles of Scotch, a good old service revolver, a bullet and a pad and biro for the suicide note, should that ever come about!

I hope the manager was saying he is staying just to make sure we get serious money for him because I don’t want somebody at Anfield who, at 20, thinks he is too good for one of the world’s most famous football clubs and especially when he’s scored so few goals this year. I would imagine that 99% of our fans will want him gone as well and gone for £50m NOW rather than on a free transfer in 2 years!

So, let us hope that, behind the scenes, the money people are working like beavers finalising multi-million pound deals that will take us from being second-raters to our rightful place in the hierarchy of English football . . . but I wouldn’t bet my mortgage on it, if I had one! When I want us to be brave and get the finest squad we’ve had for many years we, apparently, get out-bid for two players I wouldn’t really want anyway and our manager is all lovey-dovey with somebody who wouldn’t sign another contract with us for £900,000 per week!!!!!

I will be most displeased if he plays on Sunday!

The only GREAT news we’ve had is that Jordon Ibe has signed for another five years! To me he has more potential than Mr Sterling, and MUST be a regular next season, so it ain’t all bad news as far as I’m concerned.

Oh, for the benefit of the American bean-counter, the closest thing we’ve ever had to a Quarterback, during my 50 year spell as a regular at LFC games, was Graeme Souness!!!!! Currently, we haven’t got one!!!!!

Any chance of me having a say on the transfer committee, when they next meet . . . ? Which idiot thought of a transfer committee?

If I wanted mid-table, second-rate misery in my life I’d have supported Everton!

  1. Sterling can't leave on a free no matter what happens, because of his age it'll go to tribunal. Man City got £9m for Studge when the market was slightly more sane, so we'll probably get at least £12m for him closer to £15m I'd guess and we'd save about £7m on his wages at keeping him on his current wages.
Plus it'd show we won't bow to player power and aren't a selling club (just yet).
