With the international break October saw only three Premier League fixtures for each club. It was a month that saw Arsenal and Chelsea continue their fine starts as table toppers, Manchester United still struggle to find form and the emergence of the SAS partnership at Liverpool as they also continued their fantastic start to the season. Here we run through the five contenders for player of the month:

1. Mesut Ozil – A huge influence on his new side, Ozil scored twice against Norwich and seems to have brought out the best in his colleagues at The Emirates. Arsenal enjoyed a great month to see them end October two points clear at the top. Despite two key cup competition defeats during the month, Arsenal and Ozil show no sign of loosening their grip at the top just yet, although November brings with it a new set of challenges which will test their title credentials to the max.

2. Oscar – Chelsea took nine points from October and Oscar’s goal scoring performances have been the toast of Stamford Bridge this month. He is one of the key reasons the sublime Juan Mata has been struggling to get a game but few can argue with Jose if the Brazilian maintains this kind of form and the Blues keep on picking up points in the same manner for the rest of the season.

3. Andros Townsend – It is hard not to include Andros Townsend in this list given his exploits for England in two crucial qualifiers, but even when looking at Premier League performances alone the Spurs flyer has had a solid month. Probably the only bright spark against West Ham, he scored in a much needed bounce back victory at Villa Park and again looked Tottenham’s greatest threat on the last Sunday of the month against Hull. Despite a clean sheet and points tally to be proud of, Spurs are still toiling somewhat with grinding out results. Townsend continues to be their shining light.

4. Luis Suarez – Hangover from the ban? No. Lack of enthusiasm after failing to get his move away? No. Back with a bang? Most Certainly. Liverpool were hardly missing Suarez given the fine form of Daniel Sturridge, and if anything his return raised questions as to whether it could disrupt a successful side. Any fears were expelled immediately however, with the Uruguayan bagging four October goals and enjoying a sublime partnership with Sturridge.

5. Sergio Aguero – "Agueroooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" The screech of Martin Tyler seemed to have consumed Sergio Aguero for much of last season with the Argentine struggling to recapture the same level of performance that ultimately lead City to the most dramatic title winning campaign of our time. The zip seems to be back in his step now however with a wonderful October full of goals. Whilst City still seem to be struggling to get their title challenge fully up and running the form of Aguero offers real signs of encouragement.

Let us know your thoughts at e-football. There were so many standout performers in October for their clubs that a shortlist of five was very difficult to call this month. Adam Lallana, Romelu Lukaku and Wayne Rooney are all surely also worthwhile shouts for player of the month to name but three. So who was your star of October?
