Aston Villa-The Time is Now (or never)

Article by Aston Villa Correspondent Stephen Attridge

Saturday was disappointing. You wouldn't say we were favourites against Everton, but after so much of the play in the first half and with a spot kick opportunity to get us up and running the result was hard to take. We got nothing and failed to even score on home turf. It was also disappointing because we were able to field our strongest forward line for the first time in a month.

We need more from the forwards supporting Benteke; Gabby and Weinnman need to start chipping in with more goals. We can talk all day about their work rate and the odd assist but ultimately they are forwards.

They need to be aware that Lambert is a difficult man to predict and is not afraid to change things. If these two don't start firing soon don't be surprised to see a forward arrive in January. This is a big season for the players but massive also for Lambert. He has balanced the books well and kept us in the division, but Lerner will also state that Lambert has also been allowed to spend £50 million in two seasons and really anything bellow a top 12 finish will be a poor season.

So the pressure is building. The plot thickens with the news that Gabby is a doubt for Saturday. Surely Helenius will get an opportunity to shine in his absence. His appearances so far have been few and far between; somewhat suprising after a promising pre season. But whoever starts, the time really is now for some good performances and results as Villa now have a run of fixtures which do not match us against a top 6 side till the middle of December. We need to get the points onboard.
Villa currently sit 2 points above relegation but have the opportunity to be sitting comfortably around the Xmas period, now wouldn't that be nice...
I can't stress how important it is over this upcoming period to get some results. Once we get to the festive period the fixtures stack up thick and fast bringing injuries to every squad. Also players start going down with flu as the reality of the English winter hits.

The point is Aston Villa havn't really got the squad others have to cope with all this. Remember the saying 'don't look at the tables till Christmas'? It's the reason teams like Chelsea and Man City get stronger as the season goes on. Play against them at the start of the season and we may have half a chance, but play them in January and we could have Jordan Bowery as our main target man.

Aston Villa; the time is now.
