Benteke to Liverpool - Who's the real winner?

As I mentioned a couple of weeks back, Christian Benteke would not be likely to move on, due to the wildly over-priced buyout clause in his contract. Since then, as is the strange world of football, the sale of Raheem Sterling to Man City has given leave to the imminent departure of the big Belgian.

It doesn’t take long for £49 million to start burning a hole in the floor, and Rogers has had Benteke on his shopping list for quite some time. He will make a good addition to the reds set-up and since super Mario has been as useful as a paper boat, no-one is filling that twenty goal a year hole left by Luis suarez's exit last year. Liverpool will be looking for great things from the 24 year old and we wish him well.

From a Villa stand point it's a great piece of business. We've never seen that kind of cheddar for any of our players and assuming that Randy is going to allow Sherwood to reinvest that money right away, it would be good to bring in a couple of strikers with change left for another decent midfielder. Idrissa Gueye can slot in for flip-flopper Delph and Carlos Gill is set to be given more time to shine this year. Sherwood conceded that he was not given much of a chance when he took over due to the battle they found themselves in.

“He is going to play a lot more football this year because we’re not in that situation where it’s a relegation battle,”

“It was almost like we needed to get over the line.”said Sherwood.

So, with the Benteke deal almost over the line given his medical on Monday, it leaves me to speculate on who we will be plucking out of the transfer pool as a replacement. From what I understand, Villa are set to make a £7million bid for England U21's star Callum Wilson this week. The Bournemouth striker has been in fine form, scoring twenty goals to guarantee their promotion to the top flight. Chelsea are also said to be in the running for the 23 year old, but if Sherwood moves quickly, Villa have a great chance of bringing him to Villa Park.

Other perspective replacements include rumblings of an Emmanuel Adebayor reunion, but unless we get him for pennies on the pound and Tim Sherwood can work the same magic he did with him at Spurs, I don't see that move filling the Villa faithful with goosebumps.

Charlie Austin is worth a look – given the man’s desire to be at the top despite doing it the hardest way possible, his 18 goals last season was nothing short of exceptional, given QPR were demoted. He would be the polar opposite of an Adebayor and wouldn't need much convincing to play his heart out.

Next week is looking a lot more promising than the roller-coaster ride we've been on in the last seven days, but I'm optimistic.

  1. It seems Liverpool are only paying half up front, £16.

  2. And if he's crap as expected we don't pay any more.

  3. This article has absolutely no relation to it's title, other than that is talks about Benteke... So who is the real winner again? Was there a point?

  4. I had nothing to do with the title, just writing the article. It was more of a round-up and who villa are looking for as replacement . I hear from the Liverpool fans that you lot are not too pleased, but Super Mario? Jesus, anyone is better than that train wreak. A few goals will tip support I'm sure.
