Why Leicester City need Esteban Cambiasso to stay

Article by Tom Tolton

Esteban Cambiasso’s future at Leicester is in doubt after the the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan star is out of contract and has been linked with a number of clubs. However he has dismissed reports linking him with a return back to his homeland Argentina and has rejected the chance to join up with the new West Ham manager Slaven Bilić.

Cambiasso has been one of the best in his generation and is up there with the likes of Xavi, Pirlo, Schweinsteiger and Scholes. During his career he has won 23 official titles including the Champions League and has won Serie A 5 times with Inter. He has received more honours than Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona and Alfredo Di Stefano. Esteban Cambiasso has also been named Player of the Season by Leicester city fans.

Esteban Cambiasso has performed exceptionally well and helped Leicester City produce the ‘Great Escape’. The 34 year old Argentine chipped in with 5 goals in 31 appearances, but has added more than just goals to the team through his vast experience and leadership qualities and has won the hearts from every Leicester City fan.

The veteran midfielder said in an interview regarding his future, “I still have not thought about it. I cannot answer. My objectives were all met. Get to the Premier League, play and be loved in a new team.”

Nigel Pearson is keen to see Esteban Cambiasso extend his stay after the Argentine's contribution this season. The Leicester City manager said “we hope he does stay and discussions are on-going,” he also added “ we’d love him to be here next year because he’s proven throughout this season that he brings an awful lot to a Premier league side, even at his age.” Nigel Pearson would obviously love Esteban Cambiasso to stay for another year because of the difference he makes on and off the pitch using his exceptional experience.

Keeping Cambiasso is going to be vital for Leicester City if they are going to attempt to establish themselves in the Premier League and try to push for mid-table. Cambiasso has been influential this season, using his calm and collective style of play and proving he doesn't crack under pressure, playing in a relegation battle. He has given the squad confidence by showing the King Power his unique skill and ability. Him staying is bound to be good for young players like Matty James and Danny Drinkwater to learn from him. Having Cambiasso around the club can only be a positive thing because of his winning mentality and passion for the game.

Considering his transfer from Inter Milan was a free, it has been great business for the club and the management have shown great intent to bring him to Leicester. Getting Cambiasso to sign a new deal has to be at the top of Leicester's priorities since he has been a revelation at the club this season.

Leicester City fans have made their opinion known by singing “Cambiasso, We Want You To Stay” at the last game of the season against QPR and the player also received a standing ovation when substituted shortly after scoring a half volley at the Kop end. Also, LCFC fans sung “Esteban Cambiasso he’s magic, you know”.
