Liverpool will have James Milner joining their ranks on the 1st July, a good player, but with him joining does this pose a tactical change for Brendan Rodgers?

It is well known that Manchester City did not want to lose Milner on a free transfer this season, and reportedly offered an increased salary to keep him. Also Arsenal, who will be in the Champions League next season, wanted to sign him, but he turned both down to join Liverpool, a valid question is why?

My interpretation of this is that Milner wants to be a regular in a football side, and in a more central role, at City played a number of matches, he averaged 29 matches a season with City, he looked at Arsenal and even though guaranteed Champions League football next season, he was not convinced would be averaging any more matches than he was at City, with central midfield players such as Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla, Rosicky and Ozil at Arsenal’s disposal, so selected Liverpool, and I for one am happy with that.

Whether £110k or £150k a week, dependant on who you believe, he knows he is guaranteed first team football, and Rodgers I am sure made that clear to Milner and his agent during negotiations, and thus doing this now may mean a change in formation.

Brendan Rodgers I believe wants to play 4 3 3 in an ideal world, with one holding midfielder two slightly more advanced, then two creative players behind and slightly wider of the main striker, however, with Milner coming in, this could cause an issue, as I think Milner in a 3 man midfield is best suited to the advanced right side of the triangle, which I think is Jordan Henderson’s best role, giving him freedom to use his athletic prowess, to get up to support the attack, which Milner also is suited to.

Bearing all this mind, as things stand with players in squad, I think he will play with 2 holding midfielders which would also give double protection to a flaky defence, allowing an other at right back and Moreno more security to bomb on. Rodgers I think will go either Joe Allen or Emre Can as one of the holding midfielders and then Jordan Henderson with Milner bit more advanced, but with knowledge and flexibility that Henderson and Milner can swap over as play progresses. I would go Can and Henderson and then Milner.

Time will tell and early in the summer, but right now Milner signing alone gives me some hope after a terrible end to a poor season, hope spring eternal!
