Liverpool need names on contracts

Article by Red Phil

From my bemoaning the lack of transfer activity only a few days ago – hinting that the phones were unmanned and there might be a layer of dust on the transfer department desks at Anfield – it seems that countless minions were, in reality, scampering around the footballing world making bids for top players!!!

It puts a smile on my crusty old face to hear that we are near to completing the signing of Roberto Firmino, we’ve agreed to pay the required fee for Nathaniel Clyne, Asier Illarramendi is set for a move to my beloved Reds and Matteo Kovacic is almost certainly on his way as well . . . and when you consider that we’d only need to add twenty million quid, tops, to the fee we’ll get for Sterling for that lot I think we can put the bunting up and order the bouncy castle! Let the party begin! As I don’t drink alcohol, make mine a double Lemonade!

Mind you, actually getting signatures on contracts might just take away the last lingering doubts, I suppose, but we’ve certainly TRIED to ensure that the debacle which was last season won’t be repeated . . . and that is very welcome.

One or two might get hijacked, of course, but the signs are promising, even more than promising. The very thought that we could get Firmino for about a third of the money we’d get for Sterling puts a spring in my step, that’s for sure.

Add to the names mentioned above those, also mentioned in the rumour mill, of a defender whose name I can’t even get close to remembering, pronouncing or spelling and Bacca, from Seville, and we might just have a semi-decent squad next season. Just perhaps, this lone Scouser might be able to walk into work, surrounded by about twenty-odd City and United fans, smirking, smiling, p***-taking City and United fans, and give a bit more back in footballing banter next season? Last season was so bad I just told them to p***-off most of the time whereas this coming season, if we get the players we are chasing, I may be able to rip them apart with footballing wit and banter as a superior Scouse intellect inevitably does when verbally jousting with inferior, nearly brain-dead, knuckle-dragging Mancunian footie fans!

It’s horrendous being ripped apart by bloody Mancunians when THEY are near the top and we are playing crap!!!!!! The City fans used to be much nicer than the arrogant United fans but, these days, they are almost as arrogant. I much preferred the old days, of Rushie, King Kenny, Souness, Hansen, etc., when I used to give them grief of Biblical proportions!!

Mind you, if we are still anywhere near to top of the league after those opening six or seven away fixtures it will be a miracle! The only good point about that – and I hope whoever operated the fixture computer this year gets septic haemorrhoids – is that when those fixtures are done and dusted we shouldn’t have any more horrendous fixtures in the remaining games, away at least.

Still think we need a new keeper and noticed that Butland did well in his game for England the other night. Good handling, yet again, plus size and good physical presence! That’s what I look for in a keeper . . .

We’ve also got to get rid of a some squad players. The money at LFC is probably better than many would get elsewhere but I thought footballers wanted to play football and not sit on the bench for forty games per season! Perhaps they need to take a pay cut, being multi-millionaires already, in order to make the most of their so-called talents. Do they want to tell their grandchildren that they sat on a bench for five years, getting paid millions but not playing much, or that they played for West Brom, Norwich, Bournemouth or Newcastle and played in almost every game for that same five year period, having productive careers? I’m a fan, I sit down to watch games; they are players, so should be running around on the grass!

In short, our squad, if we get these new players, is going to be too big and the wage bill simply huge! Got to trim it down. If I can give a few of our rejects a lift to the airport I’ll gladly do it as long as they promise not to return!

Anyway, back to OPTIMISM . . . I can’t wait for the deals to be completed, hopefully, and then for the pre-season games to begin. Only a couple of weeks ago I was dreading the coming season . . .

Fingers crossed for the next few days in case some of our targets are tempted away by last minute bids from the four big boys currently above us and in the Champion’s League!

Up the Reds!
