Following the removal of Colin Pascoe as assistant manager, the search has begun for a replacement to aid Brendan Rodgers for next season.

Been speculation in particular about 4 names which I will discuss, and I will also throw in 2 names I feel are more than capable of doing the role.

Pako Ayesteran

Was Rafa Benitez able deputy at Valencia and Liverpool, until things went a bit sour. Recently turned up as head coach in Israel at Maccabi Tel Aviv, winning the treble. Is known for his organizational skills and his attention to detail on fitness of players, has been a fitness coach at a number of clubs.

For me, he is clearly a good coach, but going back to Liverpool I just do not feel is the right move for either party.

Rene Meulensteen

Has coached at Manchester United and others and recent years been manager at Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia and also Fulham. Currently employed by Philadelphia Union in MLS as a consultant.

Has an impressive resume but to me I feel not the right man for the role as Brendan Rodgers second in command.

Boudewijn Zenden

Has an impressive football cv as a player with Holland, Chelsea, Barcelona and was a Liverpool player for 2 years so knows the make up of the club.

Has long been talked about as a potential coach, with his attention to detail and his methods of work, has been assistant manager to Rafa Benitez at Chelsea where they won the Europa Cup and currently is assistant manager at PSV Eindhoven.

Zenden is a young progressing coach, but at this current time, I feel a stronger more defensive coach is required for Liverpool.

Sami Hyypia

Talking of defensive minded coaches, Hyypia was an outstanding defender for Liverpool and when signed for £2.6 million was one of the best bargains Liverpool has had in many a year. Hyypia has been assistant for the Finnish national team and managed in Germany for Bayer Leverkusen and in England for Brighton and Hove Albion.

Fans would love this appointment, one of their own coming home, and is a very strong candidate. I would not be disappointed if appointed but I feel is a candidate I believe slightly stronger.

2 other candidates as I see it.

Steve Clarke

Has coached at a number of clubs, including Chelsea, West Ham and coached Liverpool when Kenny Dalglish took up the mantle for the second time, Clarke left the club when the appointment of Brendan Rodgers was announced. Went onto manage West Brom and at moment is in charge of Reading. Is a highly respected coach by many, and seems to not be afraid to speak his mind. Whether he would be interested in leaving a role where he is the man in charge at Reading to become assistant at Liverpool is one thing, as well as coming back to a club where he left under a cloud is another potential issue, but is a quality coach.

Tony Adams

Has coached at Feyenoord and Utrecht in Holland and Portsmouth in England, he also managed at Portsmouth and most recently managed a club in Azerbaijan.

As a player this man was one of the great English defenders and played in Arsenal teams, whose basic understanding of defending was second to none. The man was a leader and never been afraid to speak his mind. For me the fact that a manlike this is not involved in coaching in the British game is wrong, his knowledge and understanding of the game should be shared, and is still young enough for footballers today to know him and respect him so instantly has credibility.

For me Rodgers needs a strong man alongside him, not a yes man, someone whose main strength is the defensive side of the game, especially with the current state of Liverpool at defending, my pick would be Tony Adams.

Liverpool need a new direction and in my eyes, James Milner as captain next year and Tony Adams as assistant manager gives them that.
