Should He Stay Or Should He Go?

Article by Beth Surridge @bethsurridgex

No doubt about it, Gareth Bale is an extraordinary football player, and has clearly demonstrated his skills and expertise over the past few years at Real Madrid and his spell at Tottenham. But is he living in Ronaldo’s shadow over in Spain? Should he come back to grace the Premier League with his spellbinding free kicks and unbelievable pace once more?

We have seen from past Galacticos that going over and playing alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly a task to uphold; and a difficult one at that. Gareth Bale went over to Madrid knowing that he was going to be the underdog in the team. He was the new boy and it would take him a while to fit into the team and to find his strengths and weaknesses within the squad. However, his first season in the famous white kit proved to be a successful one. Gareth found himself scoring the winner in both the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League finals, against teams that are certainly not easy to beat.

So, one would have thought the 2014-15 season would have been up to the same standard? The Madrid fans are far from happy with Bale’s turn in form recently, with 52% of them happy to see him leave the capital at the end of the season. According to WhoScored.com Bale’s conversion rate has dropped by 5%. But is this due to the boos he’s been receiving? Or maybe even Ronaldo’s desire to score the chances Bale has?

When you are playing in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, you are clearly going to be under a lot of pressure, and I suppose you need to learn how to cope with that pressure in order to perform at your optimum. Bale demonstrated a far greater form when he was performing in England, but that is because he had no one majorly better than him, other than Luis Suarez who, at that time, was possibly on the same level as Bale. Thus, he would clearly be performing better in England than at the Bernabeu, as you could not compare him with anyone better.

Ronaldo’s desire to score has to be another factor when considering Bale's poor form this season. Ronaldo has never been a team player, and personally I find him very selfish when he is playing football as he only cares about the records that he breaks himself and not the team as a whole. Therefore, in Ronaldo’s eyes, Bale is not a goal scorer. He is a goal maker and should focus on making key passes to Ronaldo to score rather than giving it a gamble himself. This is something to consider when talking about Bale’s form at Madrid this season as, if Ronaldo is not happy then the whole team is not happy, therefore finals cannot be achieved and league titles cannot be won.

Throughout the duration of this season Bale has been closely linked with Manchester United. Is a move back to England best for Bale’s career? Certainly not. Why would anyone want to leave one of, if not the best team in the world for a team who failed to qualify for European football last season?

Bale’s career at Madrid will forever be a talking point. All football fans know that being a Galactico is the pinnacle of your career. Gareth Bale will soon find his form again as he enjoys playing his football and wants to be the best he knows he can be. He is still young and still has a chance to breakthrough. So, I say, let’s keep him in Spain.
