LFC: The Man To Replace Stevie G

Newcastle aren’t exactly Real Madrid but they still took a bit of beating and, occasionally, put more pressure on our back four than I would have liked. Without a doubt Coutinho – who Gary Neville suggests is now a £30m player . . . which is less than half of what I’d ask for him if he was to be sold! – was the best player on the pitch, yet again, with Raheem Sterling also excellent, but in my exceedingly humble opinion the third best player on the pitch wore the black and white of Newcastle and is the player I mentioned in a recent article as being well worth a place in Liverpool’s team . . . Sissoko!

Big, fast and strong he is as close to Steven Gerrard as I’ve seen in recent years with his surging runs and ability to break up attacks. I was very impressed with him and would laugh like a drain if we could land him this summer, irrespective of how much it costs! I couldn’t care less that he was sent off, he was awesome! One thing is certain, he won’t be cheap!

In the great scheme of things we did what was necessary but, yet again, I want to see more from the defensive midfield duo of Allen and Lucas who don’t seem to have much of an end product for my liking, other than sheer effort and running. I’m struggling to accept both of them playing together as they seem too similar and a TOP, TOP player could probably do that role on his own . . . freeing another man for an attacking midfield role.

With that possibly in mind, the various Liverpool websites seem to be hinting that William Carvalho COULD be on his way here to be our defensive midfielder! Great, if it happens, but wouldn’t Sissoko do just as well and HE is proven in our league, whereas Carvalho isn’t! Get them both and I’ll think I’ve died and gone to Heaven!!!!

Another website report hints that Memphis Depay could be about to agree to a move to LFC and, although I don’t know too much about him – other than the fact he’s doing exceptionally well and scoring a lot of goals this year for PSV – he seems to be just the sort of player we need to replace the still much-missed, much lamented Luis Suarez. Young, pacey and mobile . . . exactly what I’m not but most great players are!

We’ve simply got to get more goals into the team and that must be a main priority this summer. If we don’t, it’s a struggle again next year against the teams currently above us who will have European incomes, to then spend, massively higher than we can expect from the likely Europa League and our dreaded Thursday-Sunday frolics.

To finally bring to an end the wish-list from the various websites, hopefully, an interesting move being mentioned – again – hints that Ashley Williams, the Swansea skipper and centre-back, could be a target for us despite being 30. Still having major problems at the back so it may be worth doing as he’d settle down our panicking defence somewhat with about four years still ahead of him at the top level. Lovren still looks a bit suspect but I think he’ll come good when he gets used to playing for a club the size of Liverpool. At Southampton he’d play his normal game without too much pressure but the expectations at Anfield are simply off the scale compared to what he was used to, with every kick scrutinized, every error highlighted on TV and by the most demanding fans in the country. He’s certainly got the talent but needs to get error-free!

Didn’t Simon Mignolet have a similar problem before he, hopefully, settled down? If Lovren can get a run of games he may just eliminate the errors from his game, even though it will be next season before we hopefully see the best of him. If he can’t eradicate the errors, it’s bye-bye!!!!!

Mind you, I’d probably play Lovren’s mum before one or two of the other options we currently have at the back . . . who were NOT playing against Newcastle!

Just a mention of Moreno’s performance as he was everywhere and good on the ball. I am warming to that lad and am glad we’ve reverted to a 4-3-3, which was exactly what I hinted was necessary!!!!!!!!!

The chances of most of the above happening are quite remote unless we generate funds with out-going transfers, to add to an existing transfer budget, and I think I could name six or seven who could be off-loaded without destroying the team. That, as they say, is for another day . .
