Steven Gerrard - Irreplaceable

Article by Red Phil

More ludicrous comments on various LFC-connected websites about whether or not Jordan Henderson, amongst others, is an adequate replacement for Steven Gerrard. Short of getting Marco Reus from Dortmund or persuading Chelsea to give us Cesc Fabregas I think it is safe to say that we are not going to replace The Master on a one-for-one basis . . . so why bother wondering if mere mortals are going to do the business in his place?

It’s like suggesting modern-day film stars – and I use the word begrudgingly – could take the place of John Wayne or Clint Eastwood when it comes to making cowboy films!

We could improve our central defence simply by going to B & Q and locating the plastic dustbin aisle and some of our strikers would be more than adequately replaced by purchasing one of those one-tonne bags of industrial sand but replacing Stevie G on a one-for-one basis is not an option. I am more than disappointed that our goalkeeping position seems to be settling down quite worryingly due to the fact that our first choice keeper made a good save against Villa and had one of his better games. The mistakes and flapping during the previous eighteen games-or-so seem to have been forgotten even though MY choice of a Liverpool keeper – Begovic – is out of contract shortly and SHOULD be earmarked for Anfield NOW, before somebody else, such as Spurs or Man Utd, snaps him up with both of their keepers supposedly possibly on the move this summer. We prevaricate, they don’t!

Talking about replacing players on a one-for-one basis . . . we’ve not had a decent keeper since Ray Clemence left so we’ve got a bit of catching up on that score I suggest!!

As I’ve hinted at before, signing Fabian Delph and Saido Berahino NOW would make great sense with both of them likely to feature in the England team for the next five or more years so it is wrong to suggest that they would be gambles. Both young, with pace and mobility, these two players are both right at the end of their contracts, or will be very shortly, so paying a few million each for them – to stop their current clubs getting nothing for them in about four months – makes sense when it would stop other clubs snapping them up whilst we ponce about hoping that the lure of Anfield will stop them looking elsewhere before we finally make a move in the run-up to next season.

I’d like to see slightly less talk about us signing another full-back, even one from Barcelona, as we’ve already got two more than decent Spanish ones and are now playing with three centre backs so don’t really need the ones we’ve got, let alone more of them!

What I want is to hear players such as Delph and Berahino stating quite convincingly that they want to play for LFC, they aren’t interested in playing for anybody else and they intend to crawl over broken glass, if need be, to get here. THEN, I might stop worrying! Hopefully, any injuries sustained in such acts wouldn’t delay their debuts much!
