Liverpool bright, Chelsea fight

Playing against one of the best teams in Europe and almost certainly the best team in England I didn’t rule out going to bed last night with tears in my eyes. But then, as if by magic, every player we put out turned on the magic and, although we didn’t win, we gave the viewing public a vision of what our club can do if the wheels stop falling off and if we believe in ourselves a bit more.
We could have won, and deservedly so, but what made me smile my way to dream-land was that ALL of the new players finally turned the odd promising performances into performances that proved they are Liverpool players for many years to come.
From looking like bad purchases from the pound shop to potential Liverpool FC stars in just a few initially faltering, but now rapidly improving performances!
Granted, we still need Sturridge back, as a natural goal-scorer and to lead the line, but with Coutinho bombing down the left, Markovic creating mayhem down the right and with Raheem Sterling given, hopefully, a free rein to roam about in what used to be called the “Number 10” role the attacking scope we have is pretty damn impressive when you consider that, with Adam Lallana – long-term - potentially taking on more of the central attacking midfield work from Stevie G and Moreno seemingly quite adept at the wing-back role the possibilities, going forward, are almost endless.
True, we won’t be heading many goals with such a stumpy set of attacking players but we’ve got a chance of running through Mertesacker’s legs next time we play the Gunners. I’ve counted the number of successful clubs who have had just one striker, and two small wingers, who come up to my chest and the grand total is . . . NIL! We mustn’t get too carried away with current success as we still aren’t scoring enough goals!
Even our defenders played well against Chelsea! Good grief!
Jordan Henderson and Lucas ran their little legs off and, as per usual, Sterling and Coutinho were excellent but the players who mostly impressed me were Alberto Moreno, who just never stops, Emre Can, who is getting better with every game and who should be a revelation if we ever get him playing in his rightful midfield role, and Markovic who seems to be revelling in his position at the moment. He could be a really good player for our club when he gets more acclimatised to the speed of our game and what is expected of him but, without a doubt, the signs are GOOD! Hopefully the new players are also learning about how special it is to represent Liverpool FC in top, top night matches at our famous ground. If the atmosphere makes the fans feel goose-pimply then what must it do for the players!!!!!!!!
We’ve also got enough talent coming through, from the players mentioned above, to give players a break every now and again with most players more interchangeable than most teams can match.
By now they must realise that this is not just another football club. We played in front of 95,000 LFC fans in Melbourne, filled the stadiums with LFC fans in places like Boston and other American cities and our support is completely global. We’ve got massive fan bases in most parts of Asia, Africa and the USA and are in a clique of United, Madrid and Barcelona who are literally global footballing entities capable of filling stadiums around the world whenever we or they drop in to play friendlies.
Could City say that, when they can barely fill their own ground? Chelsea, a here-today-who-knows-what-tomorrow team currently riding on a wave of populist support but with little, if any, long term support abroad. Arsenal or Spurs? Don’t make me laugh! I won’t even mention a team a few hundred yards away as we don’t want to depress them too much.
No, this is a very special club and I hope the newcomers are being force-fed videos of our glorious history to show them what this club stands for. Having witnessed hundreds of wonderful games at Anfield, with Terry Macs goal against Spurs in, I think, 1979 being one of my favourite moments so far, I know how special this club is!
