Manchester United v QPR - The Final Word

What can I say? It was like we were sacrificial lambs laid out for a ritual slaughter, we did not compete. It was hardly any better then our last outing to Spurs, this time the problem seemed to be that we played too deep. We could not hold on to the ball for more then a few passes. This was a huge disappoint for Rangers fans, where was the passion, why did we not get into the opposition? Make it hard for them to relax on the ball and expose any weaknesses in their back four.

The gulf between the top teams in the Premiership and the rest of us is huge financially and in terms of the type of players they can bring in. But on the day it is eleven against eleven and self confidence seemed to seep away in the QPR team as the first half ticked by. It seems a baffling division to play Clint Hill against United's strike force, it left us very short on the counter attack.

We were 3-0 down by half time, the match had hardly been a competitive one, Karl Henry compared it to more like a testimonial, too much respect paid to the opposition. It is frustrating that for all the 'team spirit' claimed by the club that we can put in such an insipid performance.

Matt Phillips had a chance to make it 1-1 in the first half, but it was not hit with enough force or accuracy to go in. Kranjcar created some chances in the second half but essentially the match had long since been a contest and it was a case of holding the fort without it becoming even worse. We had only 31% of possession! that statistic says it all.

Some fans have questioned Redknapp's decision not to bring on Tarrabt, it would have given him the chance to gain some match fitness and perhaps add some flair. We now face the same situation as a few weeks ago where we now have to pick ourselves off the floor and take on Mark Hughes Stoke City on Saturday lunch time. Is this pattern for the rest of the season? The top clubs giving us a hiding and then hopefully picking up points from the teams around us?

Redknapp does not have a good record at Old Trafford and he seemed to be more concerned with damage limitation then to seriously challenge the opponents. The media on the weekend were full of articles about Manchester United's new players, and even the match commentators seemed to speak as if there was only one team on the pitch. The camera zooming in on a shot of Falcao while the match was still in play with QPR in possession, but that is the way of the media, focussing in on just a few clubs.

Football exists because of the efforts of communities to engage with each other, people giving up their time to make it happen, but the Premiership has taken it to another level, the super rich clubs are leaving the rest behind. A bit like wider society really.
