Leeds United Finally Doing Some Business

After weeks of trying to steer the good ship Leeds United to calmer financial waters, Massimo Cellino has finally been given the green light to acquire new players for the rapidly approaching Championship season. As I thought, he has been concentrating his efforts on the leagues of Italy, preferring to buy promising talent in the lower leagues and young players from Serie A teams who have been out on loan.

As we all know by now, Cellino will not spend big on players that are vastly overpriced and why should he. I am confident that he will find some talented and skilled foreign players that will excite the Elland Road crowd, and give hope to those of us who rely on social media for match updates.

The Leeds United squad will be a completely different animal come August 9th to the one that was endured last season. There has been a quiet revolution going on at Elland Road hardly noticed by the media and the big boys in Premier League land. Gone are those players who pretended to deceive us with their experience and so called skills, and in their place will be an increasing number of players never been heard of before who will attempt to do a better job than the last lot.

As predicted, Massimo Cellino has been busy recruiting from the land that he knows best. Those that have been signed already may not be from the best clubs in Italy, but I'm still expecting them to have more skill and desire than most of those who have been released. Gone are the likes of Brown, Peltier and Kenny and in are the exotically named Beradi, Doukara and Bianchi and possibly Federico Viviani very soon. Such a cosmopolitan change around was never possible B.C. (Before Cellino).

Am I worried that all our acquisitions have been from the Italian league so far? A little, but it worked for Watford when they recruited loads from Udinese a couple of seasons ago. I was really impressed with the players they managed to have and they were not household names. I'm hoping that Leeds can get the same kind of quality, but it would be great to have the odd German and French player in the squad.

What has impressed me is the way that Cellino has been methodically doing his work. There have been many names put forward that Leeds are said to be interested in and I am convinced that it isn't just paper talk. I think Cellino is checking them all out and is trying to find the right kind of player for Leeds. Just anyone won't do! In the past we have had to be satisfied with whoever is desperate for a club, or certain players who have been hyped so much we all believe that we were onto a good thing. Cameron Stewart a case in point. But now we seem to be in a position to pick players for the right reasons. For example Jonathan Rossini was rejected last week when in the past we might have taken him on. He wasn't right for the club and recent reports that he was relieved that another Italian club came in for him has proved that he wasn't.

But Cellino seems to have a long list and I suspect he has one because he knows that he won't be able to get everyone he wants. He will get his men by attrition. I only hope that they can gel in the pre-season friendlies this summer and be ready for our first game against Millwall.

  5. Yep I agree, a thoughtful and interesting article, keep it up.

We do seem to be signing players according to a plan, good solid back line and (especially with the arrival of Viviani) a decent looking midfield. Let's hope a cohesive all round balanced team can move us on from being a one man team and compensate the loss of Ross.

I would be surprised if we started as well as we did in the previous two seasons but then again I would expect us to get better rather than drop off like we did in those seasons.
