Leeds United: McDermott's List

Article by e-Leeds United Correspondent Alex Schroeter

With the season coming to a tame end, with relegation no longer mathematically possible, attention for many has turned to the time of year when fans are at the most optimistic (maybe not Leeds fans) - the summer transfer window. Capable of making or breaking the hopes of teams and their fans, Manchester United and Everton being two examples from this season, the hopes of Leeds fans at this point of the year have been virtually non-existent over the past couple of seasons.

The plight of Manchester United has been one of very few positives this season and it can be traced back to the naivety of Moyes last summer, by going after lost causes like Fabregas and even Ronaldo, eventually resulting in the signings of Guillermo Varela and Marouane Fellaini, the latter being for a ridicolous price. Such a lack of improvement of the squad, in quality and quantity, had not changed a team that had been often described as the weakest Manchester United squad for years, despite winning the league comfortably last year. On the other hand, Moyes' old club, Everton have had a fantastic season which can once again be traced back to last summer where they brought in both quality and quantity. Positive, young signings, such as Deulofeu and Lukaku were masterstrokes on the part of Roberto Martinez, as well as introducing a exciting, positive style of football. This is the model we need to follow this summer and for the future.

There have been murmurs of potential targets, which have been followed up by McDermott talking about "a list", but this raises a few questions for me. How much truth there is behind 'his' list is yet to be discovered. Is it really his, or is it Cellino's, or now Carbone's list? Will he even have a job to be able to make these signings? Either way, there have been some very good players linked, while some are quite frankly outrageous and others are the usual kind of dross that we have been linked for the past few years. The inevitable rumours of Cagliari players coming in have started, including Ibarbo, Adryan (on loan from Flamengo) and Danilo Avelar, who we nearly signed in January but I am sure many others will be rumoured and hopefully join.

Aside from the incomings, I am particularly interested in the list of players being released or put on the transfer list, many of which will be Warnock's dreadful signings. The likes of Varney, Green, Norris etc. look set to leave in the summer, to rid ourselves of mediocre players and to make room for the kind of quality players we need, like Ibarbo.

  1. I still think Mackay Stevens or his team mate Gould may be worth a look..... I do think though that young players hit a point where they need developing or they can fall off if they are in the wrong division. We may have missed the boat with Mackay Stevens, the key time to take him may have been last year and his form and appetite could have dropped off....

Webster was the most unexciting target we have been linked to whilst I suspect Ibarbos quality may have been slightly exaggerated by the link to Barca. None the less a very good player for Championship level if we got him

  2. I would like to see us sign and play Federico Macheda from the Scum. The kid is clearly better than the division, but feels bastardised by constant moves and no direction from his parent club. Surely our new Italian can arrange this with his countryman?
