Serious Changes Are Needed at Leeds United

Despite what everyone has said about an improved Leeds performance against Burnley, we still lost at the end of the day. Think back to any number of games, you think about how good the winning team was, usually without a second thought for how well the losing team performed. At this level, if we are performing well and not getting anything out of games we are clearly doing something wrong, whether it is the tactics or players. Change is needed, urgently!

Six games without a win. This is not the form of a promotion chasing team, which we were supposed to be six games ago. The signings of Butland and Wickham appeared to be clear indicators that we were making a serious assault on the play-off’s, however, not for the first time, we were led down a road of false hope and expectation coming up to the end of a season which will now, surely, result in disappointment. I will admit that you can afford to have one or, maybe, two poor patches of form if you are serious about promotion but this is our third of the season so far and our ‘good’ form has not been good enough.

When you are looking for the causes for our bad form, you cannot look past our very, very poor squad. This is not the first time I have expressed my dislike for much of the players at our disposal, with a handful being good enough to drive us into the Premier League and then help consolidate our place there. One such a player is Ross McCormack, who has defied all logic by being the league’s top scorer in a misfiring, blunt team. To add further insult to injury, the Football League, while they dilly-dally over the potential takeover of Cellino, give the Championship Player of the Year to Danny Ings, who has scored fewer goals, provided less assists and plays in a better team where he is given regularly good service.

Despite the poor form that followed the signings of Butland and Wickham, these were encouraging signs that McDermott and Cellino are looking to bring in young, talented players. I do not want to sound like one of those people who thinks they could be our manager, however, I know a good player when I see one and one which could have a real impact for us both in the immediate and long term future. Diego Poyet, the son of our much loved former assistant manager, Gus, has attracted a lot of attention recently from the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal, however, I believe if we gave him the chance of regular first-team football, we could lure him to Elland Road, and if he is anything like his father then he will grow into quite a player for us.

Before we all come up with our own ideal summer signings to fire us into the Premier League Promised Land, the takeover of Cellino must go through. He has certainly been a divisive figure in his short time with the club; however, he is loaded and willing to use those funds to help us get promotion. You know how that phrase goes, “Beggars can’t be choosers”, well, we are those beggars and we must put up with the eccentricity and antics of the Italian to get where we need to be. This next week will give us the answer that we were hoping, or dreading, and an interesting summer will surely await either way.

Cellino is certainly the key to any changes that must be made if we are to improve and progress enough to gain promotion, with new players the necessity, with bus tickets ordered for the dead wood, not mentioning any names, “(cough) Norris”. However, we need to give more encouragement and support rather than jeers and groans if the players are going to sort themselves out, to make Elland Road a true fortress that teams will fear visiting. 1. Garbage from start to finish. Utter garbage. "I know a good player when I see one"? And your credentials to back up that statement? Your track record? And "eccentricity and antics"? Precisely what sort of person might actually be unacceptable to you? I'd suggest you go write about something you actually know about but we might be waiting a long while.

  2. Couldn't agree more OneTonyCurrie. I can't understand so many people being willing to understate the activities of Cellino as eccentricity or antics. He's a crook and a rogue. If he does pass the Leagues test then Heaven help us. What we want is someone with LUFC's interests at heart. Not some chancer who sees us as a possession even if it is a Ferrari.
