Savior, Thy Name is Eriksen

Tottenham’s glut of players in the midfield has left proven playmakers such as Christian Eriksen looking for playing time. Today against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, he showed why he deserves to be playing a lot more than he has been.

The definite man of the match, Eriksen was the only shining light in a lacklustre first half. While the rest of the boys woke up in the second, the work rate of the Dane has left many to question why he’s been on the bench for the past few Premier League matches.

A true creative midfielder has been missing for a couple years and Eriksen was brought in to fill this void. However, there is little creativity that can be done from sitting behind the manager.

Eriksen’s first half free kick almost caught the Dnipro goalkeeper, Boyko, off guard. The dip of the ball just past the wall bounced before reaching the splayed out keeper. But it wasn’t until the second half that Eriksen was able to rally his teammates. Another free kick succeeded where the first failed, which was much needed after Dnipro were able to convert on theirs about 10 minutes prior.

Picking Adebayor for his first goal of the match, Tottenham’s second, was a true measure of the creativity Eriksen can bring. It is exactly this sort of consistent supply to the strikers that is required match in and match out.

Here’s hoping that there is less of Eriksen on the bench and more of him on the pitch. It seems to be where he does his best work.
