Norwich City around the league in 80 days

In 1873 Jules Vernes’ novel ‘Around The World In 80 Days’ was published. As a result of a wager, the central character Phileas Fogg attempts to circumnavigate the world in this short period of time.

On February 21st 2014 the current incumbent of the hot seat at Norwich City, Chris Hughton has the same period of time to circumnavigate the pitfalls of the Premier League and avoid relegation to the Championship.

Despite his many adventures, Fogg was ultimately successful. Can Hughton deliver a similar outcome? Yes, but it is not going to be easy!

Unlike the Victorian hero of the novel, Hughton is by nature a cautious man. My suggestion is that he takes on some of Foggs’ more tempestuous characteristics.

At the beginning of the book, Fogg dismisses his valet and hires Passepartout as a replacement. I am not suggesting that Hughton summarily dismisses any of his backroom staff, but a look at the management structure may show why The Canaries are languishing near the foot of the table.

I have no doubts that Chris Hughton, Colin Calderwood and Paul Trollope are all fine people, but collectively they are of a defensive mindset. The paltry goal return of the club this season bears this out. Perhaps enlisting the help of an attacking coach might just help?

Or, as the three main strikers cannot buy a goal, try the fourth Luciano Becchio. Despite his previous return of 80 goals in 200 matches for Leeds United, he in company with possibly the most creative player on the Carrow Road books, Wes Hoolahan finds himself warming the bench game in game out.

There are twelve matches left this season, with the next eight actually being winnable. Four or five victories from those would probably just about keep The Canaries up this season.

So what are you waiting for Mr Hughton, not the £20,000 wager Fogg takes on, but a gamble on players that might just keep the club in the £45m+ bracket. What have you got to lose?
