On The Pitch

11 January – Hull City 0-2 Chelsea. The Blues won for the third successive time on the road, and the performance at the KC Stadium very much mirrored the performances at Southampton and Derby. The victory briefly moved Chelsea to the top of the table, though they ended the weekend unchanged in third place. Chelsea took the lead on 56 minutes with a sublime goal from Eden Hazard. Hazard collected the ball on the left edge of the area after good work by David Luiz and Ashley Cole, cut inside, feigned to shoot, before thumping an unstoppable drive beyond McGregor. Fernando Torres made the game safe 3 minutes from time, running at the home defence before shooting past McGregor. Petr Cech’s clean sheet took him to 209 for the Club, beating the record previously held by Chelsea stalwart, Peter Bonetti.

10 January – Chelsea U21’s 2-2 Reading U21’s. Chelsea recovered from 0-2 down to earn a draw against Reading with second-half goals from Andreas Christensen and a Lewis Baker penalty.

11 January – Chelsea Youth 2-1 Norwich City Youth. A brace from Dom Solanke helped Chelsea’s youngsters to a 2-1 victory over Norwich City.

15 January – Chelsea Youth 4-1 Sheffield Wednesday Youth. The Blues progressed to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Izzy Brown, Charly Musonda, Charlie Cokett (Pen) and Dom Solanke were on the score sheet. The youngsters will visit either Oxford United or Cardiff City in the next round.

Off the Pitch

15 January – Chelsea re-sign midfielder Nemanja Matic on a five and a half year contract from Benfica for a fee reported to be £21 million. The Serb made 3 appearances for The Blues in his first spell with the club.

15 January – Chelsea have reportedly made a bid of £15 million plus Ryan Bertrand for Southampton’s England U21 left back Luke Shaw, in the wake of Nicola Cortese’s resignation from the south coast club.

16 January – Kevin De Bruyne is having a medical at Wolfsburg before completing a proposed £17 million move to the Bundesliga outfit.

16 January – Nathaniel Chalobah is joining Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season, having spent the first half of the season at Nottingham Forest.

16 January – Chelsea are reportedly interested in bringing France U21 defender Kurt Zouma to Stamford Bridge from St Etienne.
