Managerless Wednesday halt Leicester rise

Article by Leicester Correspondent Jonathan Smith

Leicester City suffered a fourth defeat of the season at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening. The hosts, Sheffield Wednesday, went into the game without a manager following the departure of Dave Jones. His sacking was a result of a poor start to the season for the Owls who had only won one match in all competitions. That victory was a 5-2 win at home against promotion-chasing Reading so maybe it shouldn’t come as such a surprise that league leaders Leicester also failed to get a positive result from their visit to Yorkshire.

Things started well for City as Anthony Knockaert gave them the lead within the first 3 minutes. The travelling Blue Army of around 2,000 would have been forgiven for thinking a landslide victory was on the cards, seeing as the Foxes had won six out of their last seven games. Unfortunately, Leicester were unable to capitalise on their flying start and were pegged back before the ten minute mark when Connor Wickham, on loan from Premier League Sunderland, hit the back of the net. The England Under 21 striker had scored four goals for Wednesday before Tuesday but he wouldn’t have long to wait before he doubled his tally for the evening. His 25th minute strike gave the home side a timely boost and left Leicester with a battle to come away with anything from their night’s work.

City were unable to find a way through in the second half and were forced to travel home empty handed. There had been a confidence amongst Leicester supporters going into the game after Saturday’s demolition of Millwall but also a slight fear that Wednesday would up their game following the loss of their manager. It seems that the sacking had the desired effect with a positive reaction from the home side. Leicester remain top of the league but have had their three point gap closed down after QPR’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth.
