Leicester bounce back!

Leicester City recorded their eleventh league win of the season at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon. The Foxes were looking for a positive reaction following a 2-0 home defeat against Midland rivals Nottingham Forest but things didn’t get off to a great start when former Forest front man David McGoldrick gave Ipswich an early lead. The hosts caused problems throughout the first half whilst City struggled to get their passing game going.

Nigel Pearson decided to make two changes at the break with Andy King and Liam Moore making way for Matty James and Ignasi Miquel respectively. Both King and Moore had been away on international duty during the last fortnight so maybe that was why they exited early. Whatever the reason, City’s second half showing was a big improvement on the first and they started to get a foothold in the game. With only six minutes played, Ipswich nemesis David Nugent drew Leicester level. Nugent had scored eleven goals in eleven games at Portman Road prior to this match and it wasn’t long before he added yet another to that impressive tally as he put the visitors ahead with just over half an hour to play.

Jamie Vardy was replaced with fifteen minutes to go as fatigue started to set in and this gave Chris Wood an opportunity to stake a claim for a starting spot upfront. I suspect he may struggle to force Nugent and Vardy out of the team, unless one of them picks up an injury of course. Vardy’s game has improved remarkably this season and Nugent now has nine league goals to his name with five of those coming via the penalty spot.

The victory was City’s fifth on their travels so far this campaign. The two defeats that the Foxes have suffered away from home in the league have been by just a single goal and the draw with Blackpool was minutes away from ending in a 2-1 victory for Leicester until a late penalty gifted the home side a point. The result continues City’s fantastic start to the season and sees them level on points with Burnley who are top of the league due to their superior goal difference.
