Joe Allen Pivotal in Liverpool Revival

Article by Liverpool Correspondent Eddie Kalasa

The Welsh midfielder has not been much of a revelation at Liverpool, the way he was at his former club Swansea. After his £15m move most Liverpool fans expected a lot from the so called “Welsh Xavi”. However the performances that he displayed in the red shirt in his debut season for the club, did not reach the high expectations. Despite this it has to be stated that his passes were accurate and he brought a new dimension to the Merseyside club’s midfield.

It can even be argued that he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Tiki-Taka system in the Brendan Rodger’s side, pulling stings in the midfield and his tackling has also been impressive. However the aspect of goal scoring he had shown at Swansea was gone. One reason that can be pointed out is that Rodgers employs him in a deeper role than his more natural attacking position. His form was further affected by the shoulder injury he sustained towards the end of last season.

The Welsh International has not started as many games in the 2013/14 season and has not been a favourite of the Reds boss as was the case last season, mainly due to the form of the rejuvenated Jordan Henderson. He has so far been restricted to five starting appearances and three as a substitute in all competitions for the Reds this season.

It is the performance of Allen in the last game against Everton that got my attention. Although he missed the chance that most people would feel he should have scored, one has to look at the bigger picture. His passing accuracy was good and he orchestrated some passes in the attack of the Reds despite being employed in a deeper role. He showed signs of promise and Liverpool fans should be optimistic of a good form from the Welsh man this season after his full return to fitness.
