Leeds Boo Boys Sharpen Knives

Article by Steve Griffin

As the last minutes during the Derby v Leeds fixture at Pride Park ticked by, you could sense the dissatisfaction of 4000 travelling support begin to seep out. This was another defeat against a team that produced little in footballing terms on the pitch bar the three goals they buried into the gaping Leeds net. Pearce pulled one back just before the break but this paled into insignificance and was merely just a consolation gesture.

As seconds ticked by, you could almost see the imaginary dark clouds creeping towards the stadium. Then the referee blew for full time signalling small pockets of booing from the contingent of well-travelled supporters. Not since Barnsley away have the fans showed such dissent towards their manager and those sights were firmly fixed on Neil Warnock. Brian McDermott paced a few yards towards what he has recently called ‘’Phenomenal fans’’ before turning on his head and making quickly his escape down the tunnel like a rabbit has spotted a fox.

What has promised to be a resurrection of this once great club under new owners now appears to be nothing more than empty promises with lots of ribbons attached? GFH have so far made the right noises, spoke with the entire supporter groups including the Leeds United Supporters Trust (LUST), insisted that the club ingratiates itself back into the community of the city of Leeds and reduce tickets prices during some home matches. What GFH haven’t done is show the ability in attracting quality proven seasoned professional footballers to the club.

Leeds is in desperate need of an out and out forward, someone who can put a ball into the opposing net. What is needed is a Beckford, Chapman or another Becchio. Without such a player then this season is almost as over with the closing of Butlins. The owners have made it clear they are seeking out such a player but realistically they are too late. An acquisition of such a player will indeed need to be prised away from a premiership club on an emergency loan basis. The question is which player?

In the meantime, Brian McDermott is starting to feel the wisps of frustration from supporters. Most want Brian to do well and most accept that a serious push for promotion this season may be a push too far with the current paying squad. What the fans don’t want is a fight with relegation. Seems harsh at this stage of the season but on the back of the last 3 or 4 results this may not be unrealistic. The manager appears to have targets in his sight but for no apparent reason they seems to disappear off the radar and into over clubs squads. GFH have never publicly stated they have no cash and Brian has yet to hint he is being hindered by lack of funds.

Three new recruits, Murphy, Smith and Hunt have added very little to what can only be described as Warnock’s squad. Murphy and Smith are seen as work in progress,

potential, while Hunt was supposed to be the finished product that would excel in the Championship. For now, Hunt has failed to deliver.

The fans need and demand something, a bone will do but something is required. The board, the manager and the players cannot continue to enjoy such enormous support that has turned out for them since the Slovenian pre-season tour.

Pride Park witnessed the once a year procession of the Supporter group’s organised coaches from around the country wind its way out of the car parks past waving Derby stewards where only the naive wouldn’t think they were actually taking Michael. Each bus displayed its dedicated place of origin within Leeds and beyond. Buses full of supporters who are questioning where we are going with the current regime at Elland Road. The mood on the coach I travelled back home from Derby was fairly downbeat but also trying not to put the last few weeks of performances as the norm to what will be served up for the rest of the season.

In the meantime the fans frustrations are starting to spill over from the stands and onto the pitch. That was clearly evident last Saturday and don’t be under any illusion that Brian and the team did not see it. Restraint is required and many will do so but once the crescendo starts then there will be no holding back. The International break is now well into its first week and not a word of strengthening the team has emitted from the club.

Next home game is against fellow strugglers Birmingham City and another home defeat then will no doubt see the boo boys ranks begin to swell.

  1. Yep - nothing like a good booing!

Need actions now rather than words. The fans have been patient but deserve far more.

Thoroughly decent chap is our Brian but frankly, I would care if we had a balloon like PDC in charge if it meant we were more difficult to beat and started winning games again.

Let's inject some pace into the side with goals and that means a pacy winger or two plus an undoubted quality striker.

Wouldn't mind an experienced CB and a real ball playing centre mid as well but fear that is a mere flight of fancy.

Oh, and let's move out some of the dross if possible (probably another flight of fancy but we can live in hope!),

  2. leeds fans are entitled to boo -bmc is as clueless as the last lot of managers-we have no pace at all-why did he not bring in 2 wingers in the summer-no out and out goalscorer-2 internatioinal breaks in and we have scored 8 goals what a JOKE

  3. Leeds are a joke, on the pitch and off it. The players are utter sh**e and all but a couple, should be got rid of. Now I hear that McDermott is after a "highly rated youngster" from Manchester United, apparently a striker .... Like he's going to get us out of the shit we are in, we need a proven goalscorer at this level, someone with an eye for goal and arecord to back it up, not some teenager from Scum.

Why is it that every Leeds fan can see what we need and who we should have recruited, yet McDermott seems clueless, equally so when it comes to tactics, which are no better than that of Warnock !!!

  6. I'm not surprised the players don't enjoy playing at home in front of you lot -probably the reason why a player with any talent and sense wouldn't come to Leeds in the first place.

  7. Have supported Leeds now since 1965...so I guess I`m lucky to have seen the glory days under the Don and the roller coaster under O'Leary...Thank god master Bates has gone, but what are we left with...GHF...and Mr McDermott and his 3 signings ...Murphy..Smith and Hunt...Depressed...2 from lower divisions and the other one from his former employer...The game against Derby
has lit the blue touch paper...unless GHF can put some money into this great club then they should move over ...As for BMc nice guy but is he Leeds ...Sacked by Reading ..but GHF couldn't wait to get hold of him...unless things are turned round soon this board and manager and the so called players will soon realise that the fantastic/phenominal fans have broke loose from their shackles and WILL turn on this lot....cant wait for new investor...ground being bought back....etc...Bol...ks

  9. I am just stunned & appalled at the lack of patience & clear thinking from a now what seems majority of Leeds supporters. Every query on this comments sections & general terrace moans have been answered in interviews you can find on LUTV to quote fact.

The manager wants a striker & wingers, tried to get an experienced CB & ball playing midfielder... he is not an idiot & will prove if you lot give him a chance what a great manager he can be. He has brought in young players with potential barring Hunt who has been a disaster but would help if he wasn't slaughtered on social media or from the terraces.

McD can't play a passing game with Warnocks old squad we have.. certainly doing better than what Warnock did with his own players.

The main issue is money. GFH are trying we all knew that didn't bring the money up front. They are not stupid either how anyone dare say they are a disaster after getting rid of Bates, dropping ticket prices, giving the club back to the fans...

Oh get rid of the players I hear... yes great I agree... now to create space for new players you have to get rid of the old ones. Try going to your work place & sack 20 members of contracted staff & see the expense that causes. How many of our squad would you seriously think we would get money for or even league 2 teams want for quality reasons forgetting the decent salaries they are on. The problem here is they have good money for a year or 2 & why should they leave for less money if they earnt the deal in the 1st place.

We have waited 10 years to get a glimpse of the end of the tunnel. Now we are getting there the fan base are throwing their toys out theirs prams & sulking because we are not in the Premier or beating Derby yet. McD MUST be given at least a full season... NOBODY can sort the mess out we have been left with in a few months.

We need to stop the moaning get behind whoever McD picks & hope this season sees slow improvements & then go for it next year when a lot of the current squad are gone.

One disgusted Leeds fan. MOT lets be true fans who can see the bigger picture & the miracle this regime have got to perform to get us to the premier.

  10. Stand on the terrace for 90 mins at Derby with their fans taking the piss for 70 of them and you'll find it hard not to show some dissatisfaction at the end. We still sing and get behind the boys but it's hard when they give little to cheer.
I think McD does deserve some time and having made a mistake with Hunt he needs to make sure any new arrivals can improve things. The coaches will keep rolling up..We're Leeds aren't we.

  11. The above comment is spot on. I had the unfortunate honour of been on the front row of Leeds fans at Derby which made the perpetual piss taking by the away fans all the more personal. Apparently, one of the little twats that makes up the boy-band One Direction was amongst the Derby fans and was quoted as saying Leeds were the square root of useless - it's hard to argue against. I am sick of taking shit from fans from no-mark teams - it never seems to end.

  12. I want B.mac to succeed,i want the team to play decent football. What I don,t want is money wasted on players that sit on the bench.Or friends that should be on the bench. The shape of the team is wrong the players played out of postion are wrong..............As anyone really seen a game where you think YES this is our season we deserve to be back where we belong.
