Are Manchester United set to miss out on the Champions League?

Article by Rowan Simmons

A disappointing start to David Moyes’ first season as United boss has left United in 8th place, 8 points of the top spot and 4 points behind Moyes’ old club Everton. But is this dip in form just the usual slow start to season that we’re used to seeing from Manchester United, or is there more to their early season troubles this time around?

On paper I would argue that Manchester United have one of the weaker squads from the top six in England, and the way I see it Sir Alex Ferguson was the glue that held and average squad together and led them to glory over the last two or three years. Recently United’s best players have left them; Scholes, Van Der Sar. Adding to that Ryan Giggs’ best years are behind him and the same could be said for Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic is also yet to regain his best form following long spells out with injury.

When taking a close look at United’s squad their ability to win a title under an arguably unproven manager comes under some scrutiny. Shinji Kagawa has been wasted in the wrong role and position ever since joining United and hope for his sake he’ll be leaving in the coming seasons, Tom Cleverly although and England international is by no means a world class player and not the sort of player who will win you the league, or the world cup, if you’re reading this Mr. Hodgson. The same can be said of Danny Welbeck who has failed to impress many so far as he did last season also, his goal scoring credentials are not particularly impressive and he offers little else as a player with his assist tally not being that great either.

They do have, as you would expect, their world class players with title winning qualities; Wayne Rooney, Van Persie, but that’s only two world class players. Other squad members are top quality players; Carrick, De Gea, Fellaini, whom hasn’t looked great so far, Valencia to name a few. Worryingly, they seem to rely on young starlet Adnan Januzaj currently, and spoken honestly a number of the remaining squad members are not good enough to take the title this year. However there’s a long way to go and Arsene Wenger has recently stated to the press that it would be unwise to rule them out, their squad are the defending champions and it’s not unusual for them to have a slow start to the season.

As much as it must be fantastic for anyone who isn’t a United fan to watch them struggle after a reign the length of Sir Alex’s, it will take considerable time for Moyes to settle in and stamp his mark, success should follow, but I would say it’s unlikely it will be this year.

  1. I read this all the way up to the Welbeck comment and realised you are just one of the many doom and gloomers trying to make a story. Welbecks record for England; when playing in his preferred position is very good and his general work rate is one of the best in the league. There is also the enormously obvious fact that United are currently top of their champions league group having not really slipped into second gear. Don't give up the day job will you

  2. I see your point, I wouldn't say I was a doom and gloomer more just enjoying watching United struggle, although they are improving. I agree his record for England is good and his work rate is good, I only questioned what he brings to a side overall in terms of ability, but of course he is young and till a raw talent. They are top of their group and the facts speak for themselves, but of course their league form currently doesn't reflect that, recently though al big teams have been slipping up and that goes to show that it will be a very unpredictable season and United can no longer be singled out. But there really is no need to resort to personal insults, and I don't have a day job, I'm still a student but if had one I wouldn't give it up just to have a dig at United, don't worry ;)
