Germany Drives the Winds of Change

Somewhat out of the limelight, the formidably armed German war machine has begun cranking its wheels and must be seen as the greatest threat to Spanish dominance in Europe…but wait! This usurpation has already taken place, earlier this year in fact!

Two of Europe’s household names locked horns in a battle of the Germanic Giants in a tantalisingly poised event with explosive attacking football.

On the day it was Jupp Heynckes’ brilliant Bayern side covering themselves in European Champions glory as Robben clinched the all important winning goal. Barcelona’s “Unbeatables” Madrid’s “Mercenaries” unceremoniously bowed out in the semi-finals after a good spanking from the eventual, deserved finalists and this year the amalgamation of the old and the new, could unfold in spectacular fashion.

Pep Guardiola may have taken a very shrewd move in his decision to join the “Die Roten” with the Footballing Gods possibly concocting a tilt in the style of football dominating the world stage. The patient build up play with quick, interlinking passing, coupled with intelligent movement and constant closing down of the opposition, affectionately labelled as “Tiki Taka”, came undone via a revolutionary, or rather, an evolutionary style of play.

A tactically astute, powerful, efficient side, all working in tandem, with an unmatched desire to win, is smashing its way through into the picture. We are witnessing a masterstroke of national investment from grass roots level, all the way to the top. This philosophy applies to all clubs in Germany, it’s the way forward! The overwhelming evidence is staggering, 12 German players featured in the Champions League final of 2013 with an impressive number of international caps between them. Germany will certainly, as always, be one to watch in the forthcoming World Cup in Brazil as the next generation of stars take field to fly the banner high for a new brand of football.

Without the riches of extravagant Arab or Russian oil tycoons supplying an endless stream of opportunity, most of the German sides are required to look inwards in order to have any chance of progressing. This winning formula has supplied an accolade of talent already boasting legendary status in Germany and in world football. To name a few we have Philip Lahm, Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger benefiting from this system, alongside Thomas Müller, Mario Götze and Mats Hummels who personify the next generation.

The Media’s swords are drawn and are marching in the direction of Spain as their relentless, savouring appetite for mega-rich and quite frankly, unrealistic attempts at coaxing the World’s top players to their monopoly, sells the morning’s papers. Sometimes the unripe beans are picked before they have sprouted fully, just as in the cases of Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate, and unfortunately, when the Spanish capital choose to forage in British soil, it often ends in tears.

The top sides in Germany have, however, this time chosen to flex their Champions League winnings to make some interesting signings and even though they may not figure in the back of every world newspaper, going under the radar could work in their favour. Pep Guardiola has splashed out on two of the most promising attacking midfielders in the game in Thiago Alcantara (Barcelona) and Mario Götze (Dortmund), whilst Dortmund themselves have strengthened with Emerick Aubameyang (AS St. Etienne) and Sokratis Papastathopoulos (SV Werder Bremen).

With their respective squads already burgeoning with immense talent, these additions can only spell positive things for the future of “die Bundesliga” and “Deutsch” football in general.
